Autodesk Powers 3D Explorer for Smithsonian Institution
Public Company Information: NASDAQ: ADSK  "We believe that exploring these priceless artifacts, heirlooms, fossils, and scientific specimens in 3D can spark greater public interest and learning in science and technology—especially among students," said a representative from Autodesk.  WASHINGTON — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) and the Smithsonian today launched the Smithsonian x3D Explorer, an interactive 3D educational platform available online for free. This tool was developed exclusively by Autodesk to make rare and valuable specimens more accessible to the public, bringing their stories to life in new ways. Now, anyone can explore high-resolution 3D scans of iconic objects, including seeing "behind the glass" and even holding 3D-printed replicas at home. 3D technology is transforming museums much like it has changed entertainment, manufacturing, and architecture. The Smithsonian aims to lead this digital transformation, making its vast collections more accessible and engaging than ever before. "Digitizing our extensive and complex collection is a top priority," said Gunter Waibel, head of the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office. "Working with Autodesk allows us to share our treasures with a global audience we’ve never reached before. We hope the x3D Explorer will open up new possibilities for education and research." Autodesk has long supported museums and heritage organizations worldwide using its reality computing tools to help preserve cultural artifacts, structures, and fossils. By creating detailed 3D models, the Smithsonian can protect and share some of the world’s most important items, ensuring they remain available for future generations. Only a small fraction of the Smithsonian’s collection is on display at any given time, and many items are never shown. Digital access changes that, offering endless opportunities for discovery and learning. While many two-dimensional items like photos and documents have been digitized, the majority of the Smithsonian's collection consists of three-dimensional objects. With Autodesk's help, the museum now offers a full web experience: an online gallery, guided tours, research data, and a 3D object explorer. The x3D Explorer launches with 21 high-quality 3D models from the Smithsonian’s collection. "It's an honor to help preserve such important pieces of history and humanity," said Amar Hanspal, senior vice president at Autodesk. "We hope that exploring these artifacts in 3D will inspire more people, especially students, to engage with science, technology, engineering, and anthropology." The 3D models available through the Smithsonian x3D Explorer are completely free to view, study, interact with, and share. Many can be downloaded for personal or educational use, including 3D printing. Schools around the world can now use physical replicas of these artifacts to enhance classroom learning and encourage curiosity about the sciences. The Smithsonian Digitization Program Office faces a massive challenge in digitizing the entire collection. To tackle this, they used Autodesk ReCap and Maya to quickly and easily capture 3D models from photos, turning them into stunning, high-quality visuals that can be explored in the x3D Explorer.
