"We believe that exploring these incredible artifacts, heirlooms, fossils, and scientific specimens in 3D will spark greater public interest and learning, especially among students and educators," said a spokesperson for Autodesk.

WASHINGTON — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) and the Smithsonian Institution have launched the Smithsonian x3D Explorer, an interactive 3D educational platform available to everyone via the web. This innovative tool was developed exclusively for the Smithsonian by Autodesk, with the goal of making rare and valuable collections more accessible and bringing their stories to life in a new way. Now, the public can experience some of the most treasured items from the Smithsonian's collection like never before — from viewing objects in high-resolution 3D to holding physical replicas created through 3D printing.

Just as 3D technology has transformed entertainment, architecture, and manufacturing, it is now reshaping how museums engage with the public. The Smithsonian aims to lead this digital revolution by making its vast collection more widely available and interactive.

"Digitizing our extensive and complex collections is a top priority," said Gunter Waibel, head of the Smithsonian’s Digitization Program Office. "By working with Autodesk, we can now share these treasures with people around the world in ways we couldn’t before. We hope the x3D Explorer will inspire new forms of education and research that we haven’t even thought of yet."

Autodesk supports numerous museums and cultural institutions globally using its reality computing tools to help preserve and protect historical artifacts, ancient structures, and scientific specimens. By creating detailed 3D models, the Smithsonian can ensure that even those rarely seen or permanently stored items are preserved and accessible for future generations. Only a small fraction of the Smithsonian’s collection is on display at any given time, and many items will never be shown physically. Digital access opens up new possibilities for learning and discovery.

While much of the Smithsonian’s flat media — such as photographs and documents — has been digitized, the majority of its collection consists of 3D objects. To address this, Autodesk helped create a full online museum experience, complete with virtual galleries, guided tours, research data, and a 3D object explorer. The x3D Explorer initially features 21 representative 3D models from the Smithsonian’s collection.

"We’re proud to help preserve these priceless pieces of history and human heritage," said Amar Hanspal, senior vice president at Autodesk. "We hope that by exploring these artifacts, heirlooms, fossils, and scientific specimens in 3D, more people — especially students — will become inspired by science and technology."

The Smithsonian x3D Explorer offers stunning 3D models of historical and scientific treasures that are completely free to view, study, interact with, and share. Many of the 3D models can also be downloaded for personal or educational use, including the ability to print physical copies. For instance, classrooms worldwide can now work with 3D-printed replicas of these artifacts, encouraging students to explore the rich collections of science, engineering, and anthropology held by the Smithsonian.

To achieve this, the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office used Autodesk ReCap and Autodesk Maya to quickly capture and convert physical artifacts into high-quality 3D models, which are then displayed in the x3D Explorer with cinematic quality.
