Prospect Heights Achieves ISO Class 3
A recent article on The JournalOnline highlights how the Prospect Heights Fire District has achieved an impressive ISO Class 3 rating after more than 15 years. This marks a significant milestone, as only 7% of Illinois communities and just 4% nationwide have attained this level of excellence. Fire Chief Donald Gould expressed his delight at the successful ISO evaluation, emphasizing the benefits it brings to both residents and local businesses. "With this new rating, property owners in our community can expect lower fire insurance premiums and reduced costs," he stated. The ISO plays a crucial role in assessing fire protection services across the U.S., providing data that insurers use to set fair premiums. ISO grades fire departments on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 represents the best performance, while 10 means the department falls short of meeting basic requirements. Over the past two decades, the Prospect Heights Fire District has undergone substantial improvements under Chief Gould's leadership. While they narrowly missed out on a Class 2 rating, they managed to climb from a Class 4 rating in 1996 to their current status. According to Gould, one of the biggest challenges continues to be the water supply system, which makes up 40% of the overall score. In Prospect Heights, nearly half the population depends on private wells for drinking water, leaving little room for firefighting purposes. To address this issue, the district uses tanker trucks, long hose connections to distant hydrants, and mutual aid agreements with neighboring towns. These efforts reflect dedication toward enhancing public safety, even when faced with geographical limitations. Despite such obstacles, the Prospect Heights Fire District remains committed to delivering top-tier emergency response capabilities.
