In November 2012, the first Zetros vehicle replaced a farm tractor that had been in the mine for 15 years. The durability of the new car and its economic performance allowed Knauf to replace the other two vehicles with the Zeros tractor in 2013 and 2014.

Norbert Feilner, Knauf workshop and fleet manager, excitedly said: “Zetros is far advanced to earlier tractors and the Allison transmission always provides the best shift points.â€
In the Hutengheim mining area of ​​the Lower Franconia region, Zetros vehicles penetrated deep into the mine and passed through the narrow, dark lanes to transport the raw gypsums that were mined to the quarry. This means transporting and controlling loads weighing up to 38 tons. Each truck travels nearly 200 kilometers a day at a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour.
Feilner said: "The tractor has to pull heavy loads and start and stop frequently. Therefore, the clutch needs to be changed frequently, but using the Allison fully automatic transmission can completely avoid this point. Compared to the manual or AMT gearbox, Allison The transmission has higher durability and reduces maintenance requirements; the Allison Transmission eliminates more than 500 manual shifts per day, creating a more relaxed working environment for the driver.â€
The torque converter ensures that the transmission is directly connected to the engine, provides excellent acceleration when starting, and provides direct mechanical traction at higher rpms. The torque-reducing effect of the torque converter protects the powertrain from wear, while the Allison fifth-generation electronic control system provides the best shift points to avoid improper and inefficient shifts.
Prior to the operation of the gypsum mining area, the Zetros vehicle needed minor modifications. The air intake pipe was previously mounted on the top of the vehicle and needed to be moved to the rear of the cab, while the rearview mirror was replaced by a rearview camera. The swan neck trailer is used in the Knauf construction business to increase the stability of off-road operations.
Knauf needs economical and comfortable models. A good suspension is required, due to the low headroom, the maximum height of the vehicle is 2.9 meters, and due to the harsh driving conditions, automatic transmissions need to be equipped. The Zetros tractor equipped with Allison transmission meets all these requirements and plans to operate for 9 years at the Hutengheim mine.
