This marked a breakthrough in the independent industrialization technology of lignite upgrading in China, and lignite resources are expected to play an important role in modern coal chemical raw materials.

The project uses Shenhua-developed lignite HPU upgrading technology with independent intellectual property rights and low-grade metamorphic bituminous coal mixed-flow drying technology to convert the brown coal produced by Shenhua Baoji Hill Energy Co., Ltd. open-pit mine into two-stage broken coal below 3 mm. After drying and extruding into clean coal, the water content of lignite is reduced from 35% to 5% to 8%, 1 ton of coal is roughly decomposed into 0.5 ton of briquette and 0.5 ton of low-sulfur hydrocarbon liquid equivalent to No. 6 heavy oil. (CDL) to increase its calorific value from 3,700 kcal to over 5,500 kcal.

Su Haiquan, Dean of the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Inner Mongolia University, said in an interview with reporters that the successful trial operation of this project shows that China's lignite upgrading technology has reached the world's advanced level. The application of lignite to coal chemical industry after upgrading has great advantages: good activity and easy ignition control. Under the conditions of reasonable process parameters, the effective gas content of syngas generated by gasification is 83%~92%, and the ratio of hydrogen to carbon is 1.66~1.92, in line with the requirements for the raw material gas for chemical products such as methanol, dimethyl ether, and oil products.

The relevant person in charge of the Hulun Buir City Government told the reporter that the first phase of the lignite upgrading project will have a capacity of 1 million tons per year, and plans to build two 500,000 tons/year lignite upgrading production lines with an annual coal consumption of 1.53 million tons. The production capacity of one production line is 500,000 tons/year; the second phase of the project is 3 million tons/year, and three production lines will be constructed. The project will effectively promote the efficient development and utilization of lignite resources in Mengdong, Inner Mongolia, and provide conditions for the efficient and clean processing and utilization of brown coal power generation, vaporization, liquefaction and coking, and the economic benefits will also be considerable.

It is reported that China's lignite resources amounted to 319.438 billion tons, accounting for 5.74% of China's total coal resources; the proven reserves of resources amounted to 129.132 billion tons, accounting for 12.69% of the country's proven reserves. Zhang Diankui, deputy general manager of Shenhua Group Engineering Co., Ltd., said that the lignite upgrading industrial pilot project is a reasonable, sufficient and safe use of China's abundant lignite resources to overcome the high moisture, low calorific value, easy weathering, spontaneous combustion, poor economics, and difficulty of lignite. The characteristics of long-term storage and long-distance transportation were formally approved in early 2006 for scientific and technological innovation projects.
