General machinery compressor demand forecast and development goals

Introduction: Compressors are essential mechanical devices with a wide range of applications, often referred to as general-purpose machinery. Since the 1970s, with the growth of the petrochemical industry, specialized compressors have emerged, such as those designed for chemical fertilizers and the "three machines" used in the ethylene industry. In addition to these, traditional chemical compressors like chlorine compressors and rare gas compressors also play an important role. These systems typically require high adaptability in materials, sealing technologies, and process design, especially when dealing with real gases.

Currently, the domestic compressor market shows a surplus in the production of general-purpose reciprocating piston compressors and micro-compressors compared to actual demand. The rapid growth of micro-compressor manufacturing is largely driven by export activities. Although mode and process compressors have seen significant development, there is still a gap in technological capabilities and production standards—particularly in terms of performance stability and reliability. This limits their ability to meet the requirements of major national projects. During the "11th Five-Year Plan," increased domestic production in key sectors like petrochemicals, chemicals, coal, power, metallurgy, and textiles created substantial opportunities for the compressor industry. Notably, the push for nuclear energy expansion during this period opened new doors for the sector, offering unprecedented chances to improve product quality and reach global standards.

Looking ahead, demand for large and medium-sized compressors is expected to grow significantly, particularly for ultra-large and special-process units. In the petrochemical sector, the ethylene industry is a key driver. By 2005, China's ethylene demand was projected to reach 10 million tons, with a self-sufficiency rate of around 60%. New projects in Yangzi, Fujian, Tianjin, and Shanghai were planned, along with expansions at existing facilities. Most of these plants rely on imported equipment, which increases costs. As a result, there is a growing opportunity for local manufacturers to increase equipment localization and reduce expenses.

In the refining industry, integration with petrochemical operations can lead to cost savings. For example, a 400,000-ton ethylene plant integrated with a 7.5-million-ton oil refinery could save millions annually. This trend is driving demand for new refining facilities and upgrades, creating more opportunities for compressor suppliers. During the "10th Five-Year Plan," approximately 200 reciprocating compressors were needed annually, highlighting the growing need in this sector.

The oil and gas industry also requires a variety of compressors for natural gas processing, LPG collection, and transportation. Over the same period, about 200 compressors were needed each year, including screw and reciprocating types. Existing oil fields already have thousands of units, many of which are nearing replacement, adding to the ongoing demand.

The fertilizer industry aims to enhance competitiveness against foreign imports by building large-scale plants using domestic equipment. This will require thousands of compressors annually, including reciprocating, screw, and micro-compressors.

Development Goals and Focus Areas: By 2010, the compressor industry aimed to achieve a total output value of RMB 7.6 billion, with a sales value of over 149% of 2003 levels. Annual growth rates for industrial output and sales were expected to be around 6%, while exports would rise from 270 million to 700 million yuan. By 2020, the industry aimed to reach a total output of 178 billion yuan, with a strong emphasis on large-scale and high-tech compressors.

Key development areas include replacing imported products, improving technology for critical projects, and focusing on high-performance, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced compressors. Ultra-large reciprocating compressors are a priority, as they are crucial for major petrochemical projects and reflect a country’s engineering capabilities.

Editor’s Note: Manufacturers continue to strive for reliable, efficient, quiet, and cost-effective compressors. With China's industrial progress and increasing technical capabilities, it is reasonable to expect that in the next 5–10 years, the technical level of large-scale compressors, especially reciprocating ones, will reach world-class standards.
