Automobile electronic structure imbalance high value-added products are still imported

The automotive electronics industry is considered another major revolution in the evolution of automotive technology and is gradually becoming a rising star in the market. At the "2004 China Automotive Electronics Industry Development Forum," experts from various fields discussed the current state and future direction of China's automotive electronics sector. The industry holds great potential for growth and is seen as one with promising market prospects. As the automobile industry continues to develop and consumer demands for vehicle performance increase, the demand for automotive electronic products has been growing rapidly. In 2003, the output of automotive electronics exceeded domestic demand by 10.71 million units, and the total value surpassed demand by 1.3 billion yuan. However, despite this surplus, challenges remain. One key issue is the imbalance in product structure and the lack of strong national capital in the industry. High-value-added automotive electronic components are largely imported, which keeps their prices relatively high. Domestic manufacturers mainly supply low-value products such as car audio systems, air conditioning, central locking, anti-theft systems, and power windows. In contrast, more advanced components like automatic transmission control systems, airbags, and engine control units still require imports. Currently, China’s automotive electronics companies are at an early stage of development. Out of over 1,000 firms in the sector, most are small-scale and have limited technological capabilities, making it difficult for them to compete globally. Additionally, many automotive electronics products are manufactured by foreign-owned or joint-venture companies. If we exclude the value of these foreign-produced items, the domestic supply and demand dynamics may shift from oversupply to a more balanced or even undersupply situation. This highlights the need for greater investment in research and development, as well as strategies to strengthen the domestic automotive electronics industry and reduce reliance on imports. Only through innovation and improvement can China's automotive electronics sector truly take its place on the global stage. Source: Tianjin Daily Editor: [Name]
