Wood Dale Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

With rising operational costs, officials from the Wood Dale Fire Protection District are seeking voter approval for an additional $1.5 million in property taxes. The proposal will be on the ballot in March, and if approved, the new tax rate would go into effect in June 2021. This increase is expected to raise the district’s annual property tax revenue from approximately $5.7 million to $7.2 million. For a homeowner with a $250,000 property, this would mean an increase of about $200 per year in fire district taxes.

The decision to put the measure on the ballot came after years of financial strain. Despite efforts such as budget cuts, using reserve funds, applying for grants, and collaborating with neighboring districts, the district found that its expenses were outpacing its income. “Our operating costs are now exceeding our ability to generate sufficient revenue,” officials said.

If the referendum passes, the extra funding will allow the district to maintain a full staffing level of eight firefighters on each of its three shifts. Last year, more than 90% of the time, only six firefighters were available per shift across the two stations.

The district operates two fire stations built in the early 1970s. Both are essential for covering the entire area. Station 69 at 411 Park Lane requires an estimated $450,000 in repairs, including a new roof and HVAC system.

Additional funds would also help replace the aging fleet of emergency vehicles, which have an average age of over 11 years and are experiencing more frequent breakdowns. Furthermore, the money would assist with increasing administrative costs, such as higher insurance premiums and larger pension contributions.

In a letter addressed to residents, fire officials emphasized their long-standing commitment to the community. “For over 80 years, we have served, protected, and supported our neighbors,” they wrote. “We respectfully ask for your consideration during the upcoming March referendum so we can continue to provide the best possible service.”

To ensure transparency, the district will host a town hall meeting on February 20 at 7 p.m. at the headquarters station, located at 589 N. Wood Dale Road. Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposal and ask questions directly.

The Wood Dale Fire Protection District serves the town of Wood Dale and a small portion of Itasca. This would be the first referendum since 2002, making it a significant moment for the community.
