On Monday morning, fire trucks rolled into the newly opened station of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District along Route 38 in Elburn. After 14 months of construction and years of meticulous planning, this state-of-the-art facility, located east of Route 47 and north of Route 38, was officially up and running. Assistant Fire Chief Tate Haley, who has been spearheading the project, shared some insights about the station's unique features.
This new building dwarfs the previous one on 210 E. North St. in Elburn. As the district serves areas beyond Elburn, including the growing Mill Creek subdivision, the population in Elburn is anticipated to increase with ongoing development in the station’s vicinity. The funds for constructing the station were entirely sourced from within the department, eliminating the need for any extra public funding. Initial cost projections ranged between $8 million and $10 million, and Haley mentioned that the final price tag was nearly $10 million.
An open house is scheduled for December 13th, giving residents a firsthand look at the new amenities. Visitors will find more interactive exhibits and designated areas for community education. In the past, such displays were typically stored away in boxes throughout the year and only brought out for special events like the annual Christmas Stroll.
The station spans three floors. The middle floor, serving as the main hub, houses offices, conference rooms, training spaces, and even a cozy kitchen. Downstairs, there’s a fully equipped fitness room. Previously, firefighters had to make do with a separate space in a building that once housed ambulances if they wanted to work out. This floor also features an emergency operations center and a spacious boardroom ideal for training sessions. There will also be a sort of museum showcasing an old fire wheel that had been displayed at the old station but often went unnoticed by visitors.
Upstairs, you’ll find 15 bunks, a large multipurpose room, and a patio. Instead of a traditional fire pole, firefighters can descend from the second-floor living quarters to the apparatus bay via a slide. Additionally, there’s a training tower that can be utilized not just for hose drying but also for practicing rescues and navigating confined spaces.
With all these enhancements, the new station is not just a place to respond to emergencies but also a community resource and a symbol of progress in Elburn. It reflects the dedication and foresight of the fire district in preparing for future growth while maintaining their commitment to public safety and education.
