A tragic house fire claimed the lives of two adults and a young child on Sunday in the 2000 block of North 43rd Street. The incident occurred at 2016 N. 23rd St., where a one-story frame home became the scene of a devastating blaze.

At the time of the fire, six people were inside the home. Three managed to escape, but three others — a 27-year-old pregnant woman, a 4-year-old boy, and a 32-year-old man — were trapped and lost their lives. East St. Louis Fire Chief James Blackmon confirmed the identities of the victims: Kendra Williams, 4-year-old Jayden Harris, and Chantez Reynolds.

Corey Burries, the homeowner, stated that she, three other adults, and two children were present in the house. “I was asleep when my grandson started screaming about the fire,” she recalled through tears. “I opened my bedroom door, but the smoke was overwhelming. I let up the window and threw him out. I tried to climb out too, but I called my daughter and her fiancé, telling them to come to the fire escape outside my window. They never came.” She added that they were in a back bedroom.

One family member had to be physically restrained by others as he attempted to enter the burning house. Several neighbors tried to help, but thick smoke made it impossible to get inside. The situation quickly turned deadly.

The fire department received the emergency call at 1:42 p.m. Sunday, reporting people trapped inside. Assistant Fire Chief Todd Hill said that upon arrival, just five minutes later, they learned that some individuals had already escaped. “The house was completely engulfed in flames when Engine House 422 arrived. The crew immediately tried to contain the fire, but it was extremely intense,” Hill explained.

With over 25 years of experience, Hill described this as one of the worst fires he had ever encountered. He praised the efforts of the six-member team, who did everything possible to save lives. “They worked hard to get everyone out, but unfortunately, three people didn’t make it.” He added that the bodies were found in a bedroom, though the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with a member of the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office on the scene.

Kendra Williams was her sister, and she was five months pregnant, according to Janice Williams and other family members. Chantez Reynolds was Kendra’s fiancée. Williams shared that she woke up to her son shouting “fire.” She said the smoke was so thick that neither she nor her mother could find Kendra.

Williams also mentioned that her son was very intelligent and had a strong grasp of technology, especially computers and phones. Now, the family is left without insurance, homeless, and in desperate need of support for funeral arrangements. They are seeking community help to move forward after this heartbreaking loss.
