Still & Box Alarm Fire in Chicago, 11/7/19

This message comes from Drew Gresik: --- Hey everyone, I wanted to share some photos from an early morning fire we responded to at 728 N Lotus Ave in Chicago's Austin neighborhood. It was a pretty intense situation—a vacant 2.5-story wooden structure that had caught fire, with flames shooting up through the roof. The firefighters did an amazing job managing the situation. E96 brought out their deck gun, and TL23 deployed an aerial master stream to tackle the blaze. The conditions made photography challenging—there was a mix of sleet and dense vegetation around the property, which really complicated things. To give you a better idea of how weather impacts photography, I’ve included both natural light shots and ones taken with a camera-mounted flash in adverse weather conditions like rain or sleet. You'll notice the stark difference between the two types of photos. Something interesting to note: This fire broke out while several other units, including TL14, were still tied up handling another significant incident at 1644 N Spaulding Ave, which was classified as a 2-11 alarm. That just goes to show how unpredictable and demanding firefighting work can be. For those interested, a full gallery with even more images will go live on our website this Friday. In the meantime, here are a few shots I took from the scene: [Image captions follow below] --- [Image 1 Caption] A vacant house engulfed in flames at night. The intensity of the fire is clearly visible despite the challenging lighting conditions. [Image 2 Caption] Firefighters working hard to control the blaze. Their focus and determination are evident even from a distance. [Image 3 Caption] The fire department bringing out their heavy equipment, including an aerial ladder truck spraying water onto the burning building. [Image 4 Caption] Emergency vehicles parked nearby, ready to support the operation. The glow of the fire lights up the dark street. [Image 5 Caption] Close-up shot showing the firefighters battling the fire directly. Their protective gear stands out against the orange flames. --- Let me know if anyone has any questions about these images or the response! It was definitely one for the books. Take care, Drew
