Chicago Engine Company 38 responded to a fire in a vacant three-story "Red X" building at 1259 S Homan Ave. The fire was intense, spreading throughout the rear of the structure and reaching the third floor. Battalion 14 requested a Still & Box and shifted the operation to a defensive strategy. Tower 14 and Squad 1 used their master streams to significantly reduce the fire. Engine 23 supplied water to Squad 1 from the rear, while Engine 44 provided support to Tower 14 from the front.

The incident highlighted the challenges of fighting fires in abandoned buildings, where structural integrity can be compromised and access limited. Firefighters worked under difficult conditions, using large-caliber streams to control the blaze. This type of response is often one of the most demanding due to the unpredictable nature of such structures. The fire department's coordinated effort helped prevent the fire from spreading further, protecting nearby properties and ensuring public safety.
