To replace the actuator, you'll first need to remove the door panel. It’s wise to order a replacement part beforehand so you’re prepared. Here's how to take off the door panel:

1. Locate and remove all screws securing the door panel. These may be hidden behind the speakers or inside the door handle.
2. After removing the screws, gently pull the door panel away from the door. Use a specialized tool or a flathead screwdriver if needed; you should hear a clicking sound as the clips release.
3. Once the panel is loose, lift it up and away from the door. Be sure to disconnect any electrical connections for the power locks/windows while you're at it.
4. Underneath the panel, you’ll see a plastic shroud. Carefully peel it back to access the inner workings of the door.
5. Identify the actuator motor by comparing it to the new part you purchased. Swap out the old motor with the new one.
6. Finally, reverse these steps to reassemble the door.

Multiple Doors or All Doors Malfunctioning

If more than one door is failing to lock or unlock, the issue is likely bigger than just a bad motor. Common culprits include a faulty relay or blown fuse.

The relay is located on the computer panel beneath the dashboard. If you suspect this is the problem, it’s best to visit a local Toyota dealership. Replacing the relay requires soldering skills, and without proper experience, you might end up causing further damage.

As for the fuse, replacing it is straightforward—you just swap out the old one for a new one. However, this particular fuse also controls the window controls, so if your windows are still working, it’s unlikely this is your issue. Look for a fuse labeled "door locks/windows."

Key Fob Not Working

If your door locks function when you use the interior button but not the key fob, the issue is most likely a dead battery in the fob. Fortunately, this is an easy fix.

To replace the battery, simply press on the sides of the fob until it opens. Once open, carefully replace the old battery with a new one. If you can't get it to open, take it to a Toyota dealership—they can replace the battery without damaging the fob.
