Fluke FLUKE 18B Multimeter Operation Guide

Fluke FLUKE 18B Multimeter Operation Guide To avoid electrical shock or personal injury, follow these guidelines:

• It must be used as specified in this manual, otherwise the protection provided by the FLUKE 18B multimeter may be invalidated.

• Do not use a damaged FLUKE 18B multimeter. Before using the FLUKE 18B multimeter, check the case of the FLUKE 18B multimeter and check for cracks or missing plastic parts. Pay special attention to the insulation surrounding the connector.

• Inspect the test leads for damaged insulation or exposed metal. Check that the test meter pen is conducting. If the test leads are damaged, replace them with a FLUKE 18B multimeter.

• Use a meter to measure the known voltage and make sure the meter is operating properly. Do not use an abnormally working digital multimeter. The FLUKE 18B multimeter's protection measures may have become invalid. If in doubt, the meter should be sent for repair.

• Do not apply more than the rated voltage of the meter between the connection terminals or between any terminal and ground. When working at voltages higher than 30V AC rms, 42V AC peak, or 60V DC, pay special attention. There is a risk of electric shock from these voltages.

• Select a suitable terminal, function, and range when measuring.

• Do not use the DMM in an explosive gas, water vapor, or dust environment.

• When using the test probe, keep your fingers behind the protective device.

• When connecting, first connect the common test lead and then connect the live test leads. When the connection is cut off, disconnect the live test lead before disconnecting the common test lead.

• Before testing resistance, continuity, diodes, or capacitors, power off the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors.

• For all functions, including manual or autoranging, to avoid risk of electric shock due to incorrect readings, first use the AC function to verify that the AC voltage is present. Then select a DC voltage equal to or greater than the AC range. Before measuring the current, check the meter's fuse (see the “Testing the fuse” section) and turn off the power before connecting the meter to the circuit.

• Do not use the meter while removing the case (or part of the case).

• Use only two AA batteries installed in the meter to power the meter.

• Replace the battery as soon as the battery indicator (P) appears. When the battery is low, the meter may produce false readings that can result in electric shock and personal injury. It is not possible to measure the installed voltage above CATIII 600V or above CATII 1000V.

• Before opening the FLUKE 18B multimeter case or battery cover, the test leads must be removed from the meter.

• When servicing the DMM, be sure to use the specified spare part.

WCAUTION To avoid damaging the FLUKE 18B multimeter or the device under test, follow these guidelines:

• Before testing resistance, continuity, diodes, or capacitors, power off the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors.

• The correct terminals, function files, and range files must be used for measurement.

• Disconnect all test leads from hazardous voltage before switching to LEDTEST function. For correct measurement techniques and interpretation of results, please refer to the LEDTEST section.
