The incident occurred late Friday around 9:45 p.m., and the blast was felt and heard across Lake County. The explosion took place at AB Specialty Silicones, located at 3790 Sunset Ave., on the city’s far northwest side near the border with Gurnee. Waukegan Fire Marshal Steve Lenzi said that first responders were quickly overwhelmed by the intensity of the fire at the facility. Emergency crews from Waukegan, along with teams from Lake and Cook counties, including hazardous materials specialists and structural collapse technicians, were deployed to manage the blaze and search for the missing individuals. The scene was described as chaotic, with thick smoke and flames visible from a distance. Local authorities have confirmed that multiple emergency units were involved in the response, highlighting the severity of the situation. As of now, no official cause of the explosion has been released, but investigations are ongoing.
