Hangzhou, China – April 26 (Reporter Chai Yanfei, Intern Xia Yi) Starting May 1, auto parts and components sold in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, will be equipped with a unique "electronic ID card" – a security barcode designed to enhance transparency and traceability in the automotive industry. This initiative, led by the Hangzhou Motor Vehicle Service Administration, is believed to be the first of its kind nationwide. If successful, it could be rolled out across the country in the future. The new system, introduced under the revised "Regulations on the Administration of Motor Vehicle Maintenance in Hangzhou," which took effect on March 1, requires all auto parts to be tracked from purchase to sale and maintenance. This ensures quality control throughout the supply chain. With over 400,000 vehicles on the road and more than 7,000 auto dealers in the city, the need for better regulation has become increasingly urgent. Dr. Huang, who led the development of the "Vehicle Parts Quality Assurance and Traceability System," explained that each part will be assigned an anti-counterfeiting barcode, similar to an ID card. "This allows quick access to information about the product, making it easier to track where it came from and ensure it meets quality standards," he said. Repair shops are now required to verify the authenticity of parts through the quality monitoring data center before use. Zhejiang Shentong Times Automobile Sales & Service Co., Ltd. was among the first to adopt the system. Wang Guishan, assistant manager of spare parts, praised the initiative: "It helps us prevent the use of substandard parts, protecting both our customers and our brand reputation. It also strengthens our competitive edge." Pan Yuhua, deputy general manager of Zhejiang Jintong Auto Parts City, added that the system creates a comprehensive anti-counterfeit network. "It makes it nearly impossible for fake or low-quality parts to enter the market, promoting fair competition and building trust among consumers and businesses alike." According to the regulations, auto repair companies found using, selling, or forging fake security barcodes may face fines ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 yuan. Using counterfeit or substandard parts could result in penalties up to 50,000 yuan. The move aims to improve consumer confidence and set a new standard for the automotive parts industry in China.
