BorgWarner Launches New Fan Drive for Commercial Vehicles

Currently, BorgWarner Thermal Systems offers the Visctronic fan drive for the first time for the DD13 and DD15 engines used by Freightliner Cascadia's Class 8 commercial vehicles in North America.

BorgWarner's Visctronic(R) fan drive is currently available for the Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 commercial vehicle's DD13 and DD15 engines, which is the first time in the North American market.

BorgWarner's electronically controlled Visctronic fan drives are designed for optimum efficiency, running at the right speeds only when needed, designed to release the engine's power and help achieve better fuel economy. More stringent engine temperature control also helps to extend the life of the engine and components.

"To meet stringent emissions regulations, today's heavy commercial vehicle engines can operate at higher temperatures, making the cooling system a critical component of the engine. The need for engine power from BorgWarner's Visctronic fan drives Make a direct response and provide precise cooling performance to keep the team running more efficiently,” said Daniel J. CasaSanta, president and general manager of BorgWarner Thermal Systems. BorgWarner's Kysor Visctronic fan drive combines BorgWarner's proven viscous technology with precise electronic control. The fan drive is linked to the engine's electronic control unit (ECU) via dedicated calibration software. In order to continuously determine the cooling needs of the engine, the patented fluid-actuated valves and high-speed reservoirs respond quickly to precise control, providing the appropriate amount of cooling when needed, as the fan's on/off operation can drive these engines. Standard equipment, so we are very happy to be with Fryner (Fr Eightliner) has collaborated to provide BorgWarner's Visctronic fan drives for the fleet to improve fuel economy and increase horsepower."

The Visctronic fan drive combines BorgWarner's proven viscous technology with precise electronic controls. With special calibration software, the fan drive is in contact with the engine's electronic control unit (ECU) to continuously determine the cooling needs of the engine. Patented fluid actuated valves and high-speed reservoirs respond quickly to precise control and provide the right amount of cooling when needed. Because the fan drive can respond directly to the needs of the engine, the average wind speed is lower. This means increasing available power, achieving better fuel economy, reducing noise and improving driving comfort. Even at idle speeds, the fan drive produces extremely low parasitic resistance. As a stand-alone unit, the fan drive does not require any maintenance or repairs.
