Allegro Introduces Full Bridge Brushless DC Motor Driver

Allegro has launched a new full-bridge motor driver designed specifically for low-voltage bipolar brushless DC motors. This innovative solution simplifies motor control by utilizing a single Hall element sensor to detect the position of the rotating magnet, eliminating the need for complex external circuitry. The high-density CMOS process allows all essential components—such as Hall sensors, motor control circuits, and full-bridge outputs—to be integrated into a single chip, ensuring compact and reliable performance. The device is engineered with low-voltage design techniques, operating efficiently at as low as 1.8V. It offers built-in protection features like reverse battery and output short-circuit protection, making it highly reliable without requiring any external support components. This makes it ideal for applications where space and simplicity are key. To enhance user experience, the A1442 incorporates soft switching algorithms that minimize audible noise and electromagnetic interference (EMI), improving overall system performance. Additionally, a micropower sleep mode can be activated via an external signal, significantly reducing power consumption and supporting efficient battery management in portable devices. This feature also eliminates the need for FET transistors used for on/off control. The A1442 includes an active motor braking function, which improves the stop/start cycle of vibration-based features such as Caller ID in mobile phones and other similar devices. This makes it particularly useful in applications where quick and controlled motor response is required. Designed for use in small vibrating motors, the A1442 is well-suited for a wide range of applications including mobile phones, pagers, electric toothbrushes, handheld game controllers, and low-power fan motors. Its compact size and slim profile make it perfect for designs where board space and component clearance are critical. The device comes in a lead-free, surface-mount 6-lead MLP package with an exposed heatsink, providing excellent thermal dissipation. The 6-pin MLP/DFN (EW suffix) package measures just 1.5mm x 2mm x 0.4mm, making it the thinnest MLP available on the market. This combination of performance, efficiency, and miniaturization positions the A1442 as a top choice for modern, space-constrained electronic systems.
