ABB Azipod Global Base Settles in Shanghai

Shanghai, August 18, 2011 – ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, today inaugurated the Azipod® C global production site for its advanced green ship propulsion system. The propulsion system can reduce the fuel consumption of the ship by 25% while improving the handling performance of the ship.
Located in Shanghai Lingang Development Zone, the new base is one of ABB's four largest ship propulsion system production and service bases. A number of key components such as permanent magnet motors, brackets, and propellers used in the propulsion system produced by the new base will be provided by ABB local companies and suppliers.

ABB North Asia and China President Fang Qin said: "ABB is an important supplier in many industries such as power, chemical, oil and gas, railway, mining, automobile manufacturing and shipbuilding. As the world's largest shipbuilding country, China's shipbuilding industry is moving from The manufacture of simple vessels such as basic cargo ships and tankers has been developed to manufacture complex high-end vessels. As the largest port in China, Shanghai has a strong shipbuilding foundation and plays an important role in the development of China's shipbuilding industry."

Fang Qin said: "The completion of the new base is also ABB's roots in China, and insists on the implementation of the 'China, China and the world' strategy."

ABB has a history of ship power and propulsion systems for more than 60 years, with the longest experience and the highest delivery record. One of its most important innovations was the world's first AC electric propulsion system launched in 1983, which remains a leader today. In 1990, ABB delivered the world's first Azipod pod-type electric propulsion system, which has been continuously improved. The compact electric propulsion system Azipod C is a member of the Azipod family and is currently located in Shanghai for local production.

ABB's marine products cover Azipod propulsion systems, electric propulsion, power generation and distribution systems, drilling drive systems and onboard transmission systems. At present, more than 400 ships and floating water facilities around the world have adopted ABB variable frequency electric propulsion system; more than 100 ships have installed Azipod system and accumulated more than 7 million hours of operation, including some applications under demanding shipping conditions, such as icebreakers , luxury cruises, survey vessels, offshore supply vessels, drilling platforms, ferries and yachts.

Su Lingqi, head of ABB's global ship and crane business unit, said: "Chinese shipbuilding companies have turned to high-end shipbuilding development. The new base will adopt leading technology and top quality management standards to help ABB meet the rapid growth of Chinese shipbuilding companies and be closer to Asia. And customers in other important shipbuilding markets such as the world."

Su Lingqi said that the new base will specialize in the production of the Azipod C compact propulsion system and meet the needs of customers around the world. At the same time, ABB's large Azipod equipment will still be manufactured at its production site in Finland.

Su Ling said: "ABB is the world's leading supplier of power and propulsion systems, providing approximately 50% of the ship's power system and 80% of the pod-type propulsion system worldwide."

The Azipod pod-type electric propulsion system is installed in an underwater pod outside the hull. The variable frequency motor in the pod is responsible for driving the fixed pitch propeller. The pod can be rotated 360 degrees around the vertical axis to generate thrust in any direction. Therefore, the hull does not need to be equipped with rudder and stern lateral thrusters, and the hull does not need to be equipped with a long shaft system.

The Azipod system is the main propulsion system used in luxury cruise ships and ice transport vessels. It not only reduces fuel consumption, improves handling, but also saves hull space and provides greater freedom for ship design. Especially for ships operating on frozen water surfaces, the Azipod system effectively improves the performance of the ship on frozen water surfaces. In addition, Azipod eliminates noise and vibration and greatly enhances the comfort of ships such as luxury cruise ships.

The Azipod C is a compact product of the Azipod family with power up to 4.5 MW. A larger level of Azipod system can meet higher power requirements. Azipod C enables ABB solutions to be used in a wide range of vessels such as workboats, drills, yachts and ferries, giving ships superior fuel performance, better handling, improved environmental performance, high reliability, and reduced installation and Commissioning time.

In China, the Azipod C system has been installed on many types of ships, including helping Yantai-Dalian Railway Ferries to save fuel by 20%-30%. ABB also was China's first marine monitoring ship in China Sea in 2005 and 2011 respectively. The Azipod C system was provided by Supervisor I and China Haijian II.

The ABB Crane Business Unit is a global supplier of crane systems with extensive industry experience. It helps customers optimize the transportation of containers and steel products, providing electrical and automation equipment for controlling the movement of container cranes, ship loaders and industrial cranes. Since 1983, ABB has maintained its market leadership in grab crane automation systems while maintaining a leading position in container crane automation.
