Volcan CompañÃa Minera SAA is a Peruvian mining company that has been operating since 1943. It runs multiple mines producing silver, zinc, copper, and lead, as well as hydroelectric power plants. Many of Volcan’s operations are located in the Andes Mountains, where extreme altitudes pose unique challenges. Equipment used in these locations must be tested for performance in low-oxygen environments. The Andaychagua mine is one of Volcan’s largest, situated at nearly 3 miles above sea level—4,600 meters exactly. This altitude significantly impacts the performance of standard drones and robotics. The mine has two entry points and extends to a depth of 1,200 meters. It operates around the clock, with blasting occurring daily at 6 p.m., followed by continuous ore extraction throughout the night. Each day, about 2,500 tonnes of minerals are extracted from the mine—equivalent to over 5.5 million pounds of ore. Administrators at the Andaychagua mine are always on the lookout for innovative tools to improve efficiency and safety. When they learned about Flyability’s Elios 2, a drone designed for harsh internal environments, they decided to test it under extreme high-altitude conditions.
