While negotiations continue over the idea of consolidating fire services between Carpentersville and West Dundee, local leaders are keen to maintain the progress they've made so far. In a recent move, the West Dundee board gave approval for village staff to draft a request for proposal aimed at estimating the costs of conducting a thorough study on the proposed consolidation.

West Dundee Mayor Chris Nelson emphasized that bringing in an external party could be beneficial since the matter is quite intricate. Interestingly, the scope of the potential consolidation has expanded further. Both the East Dundee Fire District and the Rutland-Dundee Township Fire Protection District have expressed interest, and efforts are currently focused on achieving a more collaborative approach to consolidation. This model would keep the individual fire department districts intact while encouraging greater cooperation in areas such as incident response and equipment procurement.

West Dundee Fire Chief Randy Freise informed village authorities that Carpentersville has agreed to supply battalion chief coverage for all structural fires, vehicle accidents requiring extrication, and major events at Spring Hill Mall within West Dundee. Additionally, Chief Freise is planning to meet with East Dundee Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf and Carpentersville Deputy Chief John Skillman to explore the idea of sharing a training officer. Mayor Nelson pointed out that standardized training not only cuts costs but also ensures that firefighters across different departments function as a cohesive unit.

“It’s not just about improving services for West Dundee—it’s about enhancing collaboration among all involved departments and saving taxpayer dollars,” Nelson stated. “Our main objective is to elevate service quality without increasing costs. We’re definitely making strides here.”
