In recent years, the traditional manual picking of dried mandarins, a practice that has been used for centuries, is gradually being replaced by advanced machinery. According to a report from the Science and Technology Department of the Autonomous Region, a high-tech sorting machine based on optoelectronic principles has recently been introduced. This machine uses computer vision to analyze the color of the fruit's surface and accurately identifies different quality grades, such as moldy, black, oily, and green fruits. Not only does it remove impurities, but it also ensures a more consistent and reliable sorting process.
The industry sees this innovation as a game-changer, which could eventually eliminate the labor-intensive "hand-picking" methods and reduce the reliance on manual workers. With the expansion of cultivation areas and a significant increase in production, the selection of dried fruits has become a major challenge. Manual sorting not only consumes a large amount of manpower and resources, but it also lacks standardization, making it a bottleneck in the supply chain.
According to preliminary data, during peak season in Zhongning County alone, around 10,000 people are involved in daily picking operations, with nearly 3,000 working in off-season. There is often a competition for labor between different groups of workers. After more than two years of joint efforts by the Tianjin Optoelectronics Application Technology Research Institute and the Zhongning County Win-win SME Technology Service Center, the first specialized color sorting machine was finally put into operation. Initial tests show that the machine can process 10 to 15 tons of dried fruit per day, with stable and high-quality results. Each machine’s daily workload is equivalent to that of 120 workers, and the cost per kilogram is only 0.13 yuan, significantly lower than the 0.20 yuan per kilogram for manual picking. This technological advancement marks a significant step forward in modernizing the dried fruit industry.
