On Friday, January 26, 2018, around 12:20 PM, firefighters from Des Plaines responded to a reported fire at 539 Westmere Road. Multiple 9-1-1 calls were received, prompting a swift response. Engine 63 was the first to arrive and immediately encountered heavy flames coming from the attached garage, which had already spread to the second floor of the split-level home. Strong winds caused smoke to drift across the street, reducing visibility for both residents and emergency personnel.
Due to the intensity of the fire, crews were unable to make an immediate interior attack. Instead, they deployed an exterior line with foam to begin suppression efforts. Tower Ladder 63 was positioned on the roof to assist with ventilation. Four fire lines were used in total, and the flames were brought under control within 20 minutes.
A large number of units were dispatched to the scene, including all three Des Plaines engines, both tower ladders, three ambulances, a battalion chief, and the 6100 unit. Additional support came from Mount Prospect Engine 12, Tower 13, Battalion 3, and Elk Grove Township Ambulance 11. The coordinated effort helped prevent further damage and ensured the safety of nearby homes.
